Abstract

This study aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of digitally processed English picture book texts as English learning materials by integrating Python with a theoretical linguistic perspective. Specifically, nine stories from the early Berenstain Bears series were digitized and analyzed using Python libraries (e.g., NLTK, Gensim, TextBlob, etc.) for lexical, syntactic, and semantic aspects. Although the text length varied across stories, lexical diversity was reasonably high based on the MATTR(Moving-Average Type-Token Ratio) index (e.g., average for all nine stories: 79.6 (SD 0.012); for 1974~1982’s five stories: 79.7 (SD 0.015); for 1983~1985’s four stories: 79.5 (SD 0.011); with a range per story of 77.2 to 81.0). The frequency distribution of pronoun cases was in the order nominative > possessive > objective, consistent with what is predicted by the X-bar theory. Additionally, analyses including semantic proximity measured through word vectorization, subjectivity (0.515) and polarity (0.131), and sentiment analysis (negative < neutral < positive) indicated that the stories convey calm, family-centered themes that address emotional and social growth. Based on these findings, the early Berenstain Bears series appears suitable as a supplementary English learning resource for preschool and elementary school students. Used alongside Ministry of Education-approved English textbooks, they could serve as an effective tool for language acquisition, particularly for elementary school students.
