Abstract

Purpose: This study reviewed recently studied literature about the applications of 3D printing models specialized for individuals with Visual Impairments (VI) using touch as a primary learning medium. Method: This study selected and analyzed 15 studies according to the systematic search and selection of relevant literature based on the PRISMA flow chart’s criteria. The analysis included detailed information about individual studies and the quality of five intervention studies using the indicator items that Cook et al. (2015) developed to evaluate the merits of a research article in special education to determine evidence-based practices. Results: Seven out of 15 aimed to create quality 3D printing models to support accessing visually-intensive subject areas, including science, math, and art. Five intervention studies met the different levels of quality indicators, from conceptualization of research to data analysis. The other three studies evaluated the usability of 3D printed objects by recruiting students or adults with VI, which showed positive reflections on providing realistic tactile learning experiences. Conclusion: Based on the findings, the researcher proposed to expand the application of 3D printing technology to provide a more realistic learning experience. More studies are needed to provide quality hands-on learning materials for students with VI in school settings. Also, the researcher highlighted the importance of evidence-based research to ensure the validity and reliability of future studies.
