Abstract

Plato’s late dialogue the Sophist contains an attempt to define what the sophist is, as its name reveals. However, there has been controversy over the author’s true intentions, despite the explicit description that the sophist is defined at the end due to some peculiarities of the method of inquiry. All seven definitions of sophists described are only common sense understanding and the methods of inquiry that led to these definitions are not exclusive, exhaustive, or systematic, the reasons for a suggestion of a definition are not mentioned, and above all there are enlenchos of whether the definition is acceptable. The aim of this paper is to examine the flow of definitions that appeared in the inquiry process and to justify that the definition of the sophist is the last definition by presenting a reading comprehension that understands the inquiry of sophist as philosophical. In chapter 2, I analyze the overall progress of the exploration and argue that D7 is the definition of the sophist in that it can explain D1-6. In chapter 3, I focus on the production of contradictions in D7, understanding the uniqueness of the sophist’s refutation, and discussing whether the similarity produced by the sophist is false statements or the appearance that he is wise. In chapter 4, I reveal that the cognitive state corresponding to sophistry is self-ignorance and the nature of the ability is empeiria.
