Abstract
This paper deals with a difficulty that arises in interpreting Plato's concept of knowledge as dialectic. The difficulty is to reconcile this concept with the idea of “engaging in dialogue (dialegesthai)”, which is Scorates' preferred mode of discourse. I suggest that to solve this difficulty we should reject a general conception of assumption about knowledge, i.e., that knowledge is the system of doctrines or true propositions; or the cognitive state of possessing it. Instead I argue that for Plato, knowledge consists in the soul's ability and activity of conducting the kind of discourse that allows it to deal properly with the forms. This ultimately means that the most fruitful approach to Plato's concept of dialectic is to see it as being in line with Socratic dialogue.
