Abstract
This qualitative study explored changes in awareness of life among people experiencing cancer following participation in urban forest therapy. Fourteen adults registered at the Chungbuk Regional Cancer Integrated Support Center who had completed major anticancer treatment and were able to engage in outdoor activities participated in eight sessions of forest therapy at Chungbuk National University Forest from April to June 2023. To deeply investigate changes in participants awareness of life, three rounds of one-on-one in-depth interviews were conducted: before, during the middle phase, and after the forest therapy sessions. Interview content was analyzed using a consensual qualitative research approach. Analysis of the results revealed that people experiencing cancer underwent recovery accompanied by psychological stability and positive behavioral changes through participation in forest therapy. This process was found to share a six-stage structure: [Stimulation → Acceptance of the Forest → Purification → Self-Acceptance →Fulfillment →Change]. Based on this, the derived ‘Forest Therapy Recovery Model’ elucidated the mechanism by which people experiencing cancer experience enhanced well-being as their healing experience expands in an ascending spiral structure through continuous interaction with the natural environment. This indicates that forest therapy constitutes a transformative healing experience involving ‘nature immersionemotional recovery-self-reflection-positive reinterpretation of life’. In conclusion, this study confirmed that forest therapy is an effective integrated intervention that induces sustainable recovery in people experiencing cancer by halting negative emotions, enhancing physical and mental vitality, and leading to a change in awareness of life through positive reappraisal.
