Abstract
Mr. Shousuke Murai presented new perspectives on various issues in East Asian relations history in his 1988 book, Medieval Japan in Asia (『アジアのなかの中世日本』). This publication gained significant attention in Japanese academic circles. Building on these achievements, he introduced a new theory called the “Marginal Man Theory.” Through this theory, he proposed that there were “Marginal Spaces” between East Asian countries in the Medieval Period, referring to those who operated in these spaces as “Marginal Men.” These people engaged in international activities such as trade, diplomacy, and piracy, with the Waegu (Wakou, Japanese pirates) being a notable example. However, his “Marginal Man Theory” primarily focused on grassroots common people, and did not adequately address the influence of states and local powers affecting them. This issue was noted by several Japanese scholars from the 2010s onward. Consequently, since then, studies in Japan regarding the East Asian regional history have tended to emphasize the political history of local powers rather than the social history of grassroots common people. with developments in Mr. Murai’s “Marginal Man Theory” becoming scarce. To address these issues, the current “Marginal Man Theory” needs to resolve the following challenges: First, the theoretical framework of the “Marginal Man Theory” lacks clarity on several levels, particularly in (1) the unclear definitions of core terms and (2) the excessive use of speculative statements. Second, regarding Mr. Murai’s handling of historical records, several scholars from both Korea and Japan have pointed out problems, such as omissions and inaccuracies in citations, interpretive errors, leaps in logic and exaggerations, and inappropriate selection of sources. This paper also highlights additional issues in Mr. Murai’s citation and arguments regarding Shinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungram (『新增東國輿地勝覽』) in relation to the so-called “Island Evacuation Policy (空島政策).” Third, Mr. Murai’s “Marginal Man Theory” exhibits several problematic aspects, including (1) a pro-Japanese bias in his “Concentric Circles” argument, and (2) another pro-Japanese bias in the “Antagonistic Relationship between State and Region” argument. These aspects reveal that he has yet to reach a “trans-national perspective”, and remains constrained within the connection between the “medieval Japan” and “modern nation-state Japan.”
