Abstract

Using the firm-level data for the electronic components and communication equipment industry in Korea between 2008 and 2015, this paper empirically examines the self-selection and learning-by-exporting hypothesis. I documents the differences in productivity, size and capital intensity between exporters and non-exporters as well as exporting and FDI firms. Using OLS with firm fixed effects, the fixed-effects logit model and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, I find that exporters are more productive than non-exporters, and the more productive firms self-select into export markets. In addition, it is found that the most productive firms engage in exports and foreign direct investment. Finally, Propensity Score Matching technique is applied to estimate the average treatment effects on the treated. However, I do not find the evidence that exporting improves firm productivity.
