Abstract

In Phygital Commons , Kwangsuk Lee brings important issues such as the data society, platform apparatus, the sharing economy and city, copy left movements, the anthropocene, and the Green New Deal to the phygital sphere and examines them from the perspective of the commons. In this sphere, the logic of the platform overwhelms the order of the material world. In other words, the dominant grammar of enclosure traps the activities of the multitude into the value circuit of capital. However, the phygital sphere is also an opportunity for the potential to construct an alternative society. Kwangsuk Lee closely analyzes this accumulation strategy of capital but does not miss the possibility of reappropriation to reverse it. As interest in the commons increases, a number of studies have addressed it, but attempts to situate the commons in various fields are rare. By paying particular attention to the phygital sphere that is emerging today, he critiques the commons discourse that focuses on small communities. The commons, he thinks, are not weak forces that occasionally appear in the interstices in capitalism, but powerful forces that can reverse the mechanism of capitalist technology. The significance of this book lies in its search for ways to overturn the grammar of the phygital sphere. And its usefulness will be even greater when we are engaged in this project together.
