Abstract
This study aims to analyze the technologies of governance and the politics of affect in 21st-century post-fascist societies, exploring the potential of “planetary politics” as an alternative political imagination. Methodologically, the research conducts a close reading and theoretical analysis of Bae Myung-hoon's short story collections Tower and Mars and Me, focusing on the transformation of governance and affect. The study first diagnoses the social conditions and emotional structures underpinning the rise of post-fascism since the late twentieth century. Through an analysis of the allegorical city-state “Beanstalk” in Tower, it critically examines the modes of post-authoritarian governance and the normalization of surveillance and exclusion. Subsequently, Mars and Me is analyzed to discuss the possibilities of planetary governance and planetary thinking, as well as the imagination of new forms of community. The comparative analysis highlights how SF narratives and spatial allegories in these works reveal transformations in power, affect, and solidarity in contemporary society. As a result, the study confirms that post-fascism after neoliberalism has evolved into a sophisticated form of governance mediated by affect, technology, and autonomy, rather than overt repression. Furthermore, it argues that the political imagination offered by SF narratives enables us to seek alternative possibilities beyond the crisis of democracy. This discussion suggests that contemporary literature serves as a significant theoretical resource for expanding planetary ethics, solidarity, and new forms of political subjectivity.
