Abstract

This study aims to empirically examine the potential fusion between ‘Gwaegi(怪奇)’ narratives during the Japanese colonial period and ‘Science Fiction(SF)’, identifying how traditional horror narratives evolved through the integration of scientific imagination. The research analyzes texts found in the Japanese-language colonial magazine Joseon Gongron and Choi Nam-seon's journal Gwaegi, alongside relevant writings. Utilizing comparative literary and cultural-historical approaches, the study explores the importation routes of Japanese ghost stories, the process of introducing scientific logic, and the humanities-based interpretations of supernatural phenomena. A philological analysis was also conducted to trace narrative transformations in response to the sociocultural context of the time. During the colonial period, ghost story concepts introduced via Japanese media began to merge with scientific interpretations. In Joseon Gongron, ghost appearances were reinterpreted using psychological terms such as hysteria, hypnosis, and telepathy, while supernatural events were connected to ideas like the immortality of the soul and atavism—reflecting SF-like reasoning. Meanwhile, Choi Nam-seon expanded the concept of the “strange” (gwae) into a subject of humanities inquiry in Gwaegi, systematizing themes such as mutation, time distortion, and transdimensional travel. His narratives reimagined traditional fantasy elements—such as ‘seongyeong(fairy realms)’—as parallel universes, and supernatural powers as products of genetic transformation, thus linking traditional imagination with modern science. These cases demonstrate that kaiki narratives could function as a foundational structure for SF storytelling. This study confirms that gwaegi narratives of the Japanese colonial period served as a formative influence in the development of Korean SF by integrating scientific logic. The spiritualist interpretations in Joseon Gongron and the theorization of the “strange” by Choi Nam-seon repositioned supernatural phenomena from mere superstition into objects of scholarly exploration, laying the groundwork for later SF inquiries into the boundaries between humans, technology, and transcendence. Academically, this research contributes to expanding the historiography of Korean SF, while culturally, it proposes a model for generating original narratives through the fusion of traditional ghost stories with advanced technologies. By clarifying the points of intersection between gwaegi narratives and contemporary SF themes—such as posthumanism, virtual reality, and genetic engineering—the study is expected to offer practical insights for future creative works and media content development.
