Abstract

In the 21st century, humanity confronts massive phenomena such as the climate crisis, a hyper-connected society, and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, all of which overwhelm individual comprehension and control. This reality reveals the fundamental limits of the modern subject, or the ‘hyper-subject,’ which was premised on the belief that it could objectively grasp and dominate the world. This paper employs ecophilosopher Timothy Morton's concept of the ‘hyperobject’ as its core analytical framework to explore how the novels of Bae Myung-hoon give literary form to this hyperobjective reality and the limits of the hyper-subject. For Morton, a hyperobject is an entity so massively distributed in time and space that it cannot be fully grasped by human cognition; it exhibits ‘viscosity,’ clinging to individuals and rendering their resistance futile. This study focuses on how Bae's novels deeply explore the frustration experienced by the human subject within such hyperobjective systems, as well as the potential for alternatives. Chapter 2 analyzes "Smart D" to show how the ‘viscosity’ of the hyperobject of platform capitalism controls individual lives and neutralizes resistance. Chapter 3 examines "Guardian of the Demand Curve," illustrating how a hyper-subjective human, detached from the world and pursuing a transcendent ‘enlightenment,’ drifts and becomes frustrated within a black-box world completely replaced by artificial intelligence. Finally, Chapter 4 investigates the Mars and I series, highlighting the attempt to escape from the inertia of the grand hyperobject of civilization. In the new space of Mars, the characters seek to move beyond a human-centered ‘global perspective’ towards a ‘planetary perspective’—a new subjectivity of ‘recovery’ that overcomes failure and extinction through relational networks and interdependence. In conclusion, Bae Myung-hoon's novels do not merely present the pessimistic conditions of a hyperobjective reality. They propose an alternative model of humanity: the ‘recovering subject’ that reconstructs itself through relationships and solidarity, moving beyond hyper-subjective arrogance. This can be read as a rigorous literary response to Morton's philosophical challenge of establishing new ontological relationships amidst the inevitable entanglement with hyperobjects.
