Abstract

This paper examines Toegye(退溪) Lee Hwang(李滉)’s scholarly orientation during his period of residence at Gyesang(溪上)—which marked an important turning point in his life as a scholar—and the academic tasks he set for himself in his later years, focusing on his Chinese poems. The Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism(朱子學) that Toegye sought to succeed in this period was a form of li learning(理學) grounded in the principle of li(理) as its ultimate aim, and it also emphasized the study of the Xin jing(󰡔心經󰡕) particularly Zhu Xi’s Annotated Classic of the Mind(󰡔心經附註󰡕). Toegye expressed his late-life academic concerns and objectives in the poetic series “Fourteen Poems Composed in Leisure, Following the Rhymes of Zhao Shijing, Gu Jingrui, Kim Sungeo, and Gwon Gyengsu”. In poems 5 through 13 of this work, Toegye presents his late academic tasks while reflecting on the history of Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism in both China and Korea. He discusses, through the figures who inherited and developed this tradition, how Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism was systematized by Zhu Xi, transmitted through the Yuan dynasty, and received in late Goryeo, continuing into Toegye’s own time. He then sought to fulfill these tasks through his scholarly activities in his final years. In this process, Toegye traced the lineage of scholars who upheld the essential spirit of Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism from the late Song through the Yuan to the Ming dynasty—especially those associated with the Classic of the Mind and its Annotated version—into the line of “Chen Dexiu(陳德秀)→Wu Cheng(吳澄)→Cheng Minzheng(程敏政).” However, whether this genealogical understanding is entirely valid remains a matter of scholarly debate. And Toegye was the first to organize the history of Zhu Xi, Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism in Korea—from its introduction from Yuan China in the late Goryeo period up to his own time—into a lineage of “Jeong Mong-ju(鄭夢周) and Lee Saek(李穡)→Gwon Geun(權近)→Kim Jong-jik(金宗直)→Ju Se-bung(周世鵬).” Later, Toegye redefined the history of Korean Neo-Confucianism in connection with the theory of the Transmission of the Way(道統論), presenting a new lineage of “Kim Hong-gil(金宏弼) and Jeong Yuchang(鄭汝昌)→Jo Gwang-jo(趙光祖)→Lee Eon-jeok(李彦迪).” However, in this work, he left the earlier version—“Jeong Mong-ju and Yi Saek→Gwon Geun→Kim Jong-jik→Ju Se-bung”—largely intact, with only minor revisions to its content. That Toegye accepted as they were the two lineages that are difficult to find any connecting point between has become a major issue to be resolved in discussing the history of Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism in Korea today. Further, more in-depth research on this matter is required in the future.
