루터의 종교개혁의 핵심은 칭의론이다. 그는 칭의론에 의해 그리스도교의 교리가 넘어지기도 하고 서기도 하는 그리스도교의 중심교리로 보았다. 칭의론에 대한 로마 가톨릭교회와 루터의 논쟁으로 가톨릭과 개신교가 분리된다. 그 이후 거의 5세기만에 루터교회와 가톨릭교회는 칭의가 인간의 공로 때문이 아니라, 그리스도의 구원 행위에 대한 믿음을 통해 성취되는 삼위일체이신 하나님의 역사임을 합의한 합동선언문을 발표한다. 그러나 융엘은 이 합동선언문 속에 진정으로 포함되어 있어야 할 핵심 내용들이 합의되지 못하고 있다고 본다. 따라서 교회연합을 위해서라면 계속되는 협의를 통해 합동선언문 부록 속에 칭의론의 핵심 내용을 첨가해야 한다고 지적한다. 그는 로마 가톨릭교회와 달리 루터 측이 교회연합을 위한 신학 작업이 부족했음을 인정하고『그리스도교 복음의 핵심으로서 경건하지 않는 자의 칭의에 관한 복음』이라는 책을 저술한다. 그는 이 책에서 루터의 개혁정신인 칭의론이 무엇인지 설명하고 있다. 칭의론은 오늘날 우리에게도 중요하며, 칭의론을 통해서야 인간을 참으로 이해할 수 있으며, 교회를 올바로 이해할 수 있다는 것이다. 칭의론에 대한 논의는 한국교회일치운동을 위해서도 필요하다.
Abstract
Eberhard Jngel explores and evaluates the role of justification in Christian faith, and emphasizes its central importance. This work covers discussions of sin and grace and considers writings from Plato to Aristotle through to 20th century Catholic and Protestant thinkers. It then moves on to a consideration of the righteousness of God in its Christian context, and in particular to Gods righteousness in Christ. A major contribution to theological discussion is found in his fresh and fearless treatment of the unfashionable topic of sin. Throughout the work, Jngel constantly interacts with the great Catholic and Protestant thinkers, his skill as a theologian matched by his insight as a philosopher. This significant work, precipitated by the Lutheran-Roman Catholic Joint Declaration on the doctrine of justification, represents Jngels most sustained theological writing for some time. Every responsible theological effort will then be made, he said, to improve the concrete relations among the churches, and to accept provocation to enter into fruitful and creative dispute. "Not every factual difference requires opposition," Jngel emphasized; there are also differences which must be tolerated as part of the riches of Christianity.
