본 논문은 하와이 한인 연구가 로버타 장이 필자가 소속된 이화인문과학원에 기증한 1903년에서 1905년에 하와이로 이민 간 사람들의 자녀들이 구술한 영상 인터뷰와 그것을 필자가 책으로 만든 When the Korean World in Hawaii was Young 1903-1940을 주자료로 사용한다. 그 구술책에서 역사의 주체는 바로 자기 자신이며 주제는 하와이에서 우리 민족이 어렸을 때의 삶을 살아온 자신의 생각과 감정이다. 필자는 경험에 대한 개인의 감정이 사회와의 연관성 속에서 배태되고 드러나 용해된 형태의 사회적 경험이 되어가는 이 귀중한 특성을 부각시키기 위해 레이먼드 윌리엄스의 ‘감정의 구조’라는 개념을 가져왔다. 본 논문은 초창기 하와이 사회를 어떤 명시적인 제도나 사회적 형식이 아닌, 주체인 이민자 개인들이 실제로 체험하고 느끼는 감정에 초점을 두고 있다. 충동과 억제와 경향 같은 정서적 요소들이 점차 부각되기 시작하며 서로 작용하며 하나의 ‘구조’로서 사회적 의미를 배태하고 드러내는 것이다. 필자는 낯선 서구의 땅에 이민 와서 공식어인 영어도 전혀 못한 채 비슷한 처지의 여러 민족계의 이민노동자들만 모여 사는 사탕수수 농장의 협소한 공동체 속에서 하와이 초창기 한인들이 어떻게 생존을 도모하는지 어떠한 특징적인 감정이 이들에게서 생기고 부각되는지를 분석하였다. 한인들의 두드러지는 감정 구조로는 가까운 사람을 의존하며 보고 따라하는 의존감이 크게 떠오른다. 그 다음으로는 조선의 신분과 관습으로부터 자유로워지고 상층의 백인을 제외하고는 아직 중산층이 세력화되지 않은 하와이 사회에서 열심히 노력하면 성공할 수 있다는 분발심이 두 번째로 두드러지는 감정 구조이다. 한인감리교회와 한인기독교회의 괄목할 교육이 한인들의 분발심의 도약을 가능하게 한다. 본 논문은 초창기 하와이 한인들이 의존감과 분발심을 통해 사탕수수 농장을 벗어나서 ‘알 수 있는 공동체’를 넓혀갔고 부모 자녀간의 두터운 공감이 그들의 고된 삶에 빛을 비추어 주었음을 살펴본다.
Abstract
This article used as primary resources both 30 oral interviews of descendantsof the early Korean immigrants who arrived in Hawaii from 1903 to 1915 andthe book When the Korean World in Hawaii was Young 1903-1940 which was madeof 19 oral interviews among the donated ones by Roberta Chang. In these oralresources, the subject of history is oneself who is telling and the main contentis the thought and feeling of the teller who had lived during the earliest days ofKoreans in Hawaii. I brought the concept of Raymond Williams’s ‘Structure ofFeeling’ to explain how personal feeling according to certain experience is emergedin relation to society and become the social experience in solution. This articleis focused on not a certain evident institution or social form but the immigrantthemselves’ feelings. Emotional elements such as impulse or tendency are gettingemerged and manifested and enacted each other and they turn to be a structurewhich has social meaning. I analyzed how the first Koreans in Hawaii had struggledto survive and what feelings out of them had emerged to be a structure. The distinctstructure of feeling in Koreans is feeling of dependance to imitate and rely on someoneclose to acculturate. The second distinct structure of feeling is exertion for theKoreans to enable to have dream to succeed only if trying hard in Hawaii. Thedevoted education of Korean Methodist Church and Korean Christian Church enabledKoreans to take a leap. This article explores that the first Koreans in Hawaii could get out of plantations and expand their ‘Knowable Communities’ through the feelingof dependence and exertion and shows that the thick sympathy between parentsand children could console the first generations’ hard lives.
