Abstract

This study examines the formalization of convergence education in Korean universities and proposes educational-philosophical alternatives. Formalization refers to institutional expansion that lacks substantive educational function. Although convergence education has grown quantitatively, students do not understand its purpose, and evaluation systems continue to operate within departmental boundaries. Formalization functions through two main structures: qualification-overemphasis, as described by Biesta, and arborescent systems, as discussed by Deleuze. Qualification-overemphasis limits education to employment rates and measurable competencies. Arborescent systems restrict interdisciplinary connections by maintaining hierarchical departmental structures. This study uses Biesta's subjectification as its normative reference and Deleuze's rhizome as its structural design principle, but it rejects Deleuze's de-subjectification ontology. This selective use represents pedagogical translation rather than simple compromise. Because education requires that "someone becomes something," fully accepting de-subjectification would make education impossible. The study applies Deleuze's structural concepts, such as rhizome and deterritorialization, to curriculum design, while substituting Biesta's subjectification for Deleuze's ontological claims. The study presents a spiral generative model of "subjectification-becoming" that includes four stages: encounter with the Other, boundary crossing, creative integration, and emergence of uniqueness. The model identifies three structural conditions: dialogical assessment, modular curriculum, and boundary spaces. The significance of this study lies in its philosophical rather than operational diagnosis, its reinterpretation of Western theory within the Korean context, its response to recent critiques of Biesta, and its concrete institutional design that bridges theory and practice. However, the study is limited by the absence of field experience data and by challenges in maintaining a productive ontological tension between Biesta and Deleuze. Further verification through qualitative and action research is necessary.
