Abstract

Parmenides displays in Parmenides the chief logical difficulties embedded in the theory of Idea. Oppositional properties can be predicated of things in the actual world. Things in the world, indeed, are able to move and be at rest. If Idea is defined in itself, any oppositional predications cannot be permitted for them. Idea cannot partake in things in the actual world, for the world of Idea is absolutely different from the actual world, so that Idea has nothing to do with them; thus, we cannot know Idea, and we cannot even say that it exists. Things in the world change over time while Idea does not. If we explicate the mechanism of partaking of unchangeable Ideas in the process of change, the possibility of Ideas’ partaking in things in the world can be secured. Things in time are either moving or in the state of rest. The things in the state of rest cannot move as things moving cannot be in the state of rest; therefore, the moment of transition from moving to rest, from rest to moving does not exist within time. Changes without this transitional moment, i.e. an instant (eksaiphnes), are not feasible. Without this instant, neither moving nor rest can be predicated of things in time. The intervention of instant, which does not belong to time, is necessary for the oppositional predicability (moving and rest) for the things in time. In 155e-157b, by showing that the instant, not being in time, secures the oppositional predicability for the things in time, Plato answers the chief logical difficulties of the doctrine of participation.
