Abstract
This paper aims at examining how the monopolization of ideology has been constructed and transformed in democratic transition and consolidation period in South Korea. In the pre-democratization period, conservative political forces were exclusively possessing ideological influence at state level, and forced civil society to accept it. However, at civil society level, conservative ideology was gradually overpowerd by liberalist ideology. Based on these points, it would be insisted that both ideologies were in antagonistic relation in this era. But, in the post-democratization period, liberalist political forces came to power at last and liberalist ideology was started to infiltrate into state. As a consequence, liberalist ideology became new hegemonic ideology and the relation of both ideologies were transformed into competitive one. This transformation was not made through unilateral process but dialectical process, which both ideologies were converged by means of reciprocal action.
