Abstract

This study analyses the result of Malaysian general election, held in March 2008. In this election, Barisan Nasional, which has been ruling since the independence and received 2/3 majority continuously, was unable to maintain the 2/3 majority at the parliament. It was de-facto defeat of the ruling coalition and victory of the opposition. More precisely, non-Malay parties in the ruling coalition fared miserably and the multi-racial party in opposition made significant progress. In addition, the opposition took five state governments. The reason behind this surprising election result are 1) Abdullah Badawi’s poor leadership which did not satisfy the people’s expectation and the people’s disillusion with UMNO factionalism and; 2) Abdullah Badawi’s inability as Prime Minister shown in the judiciary scandal, rising consumer price, rocketing crime rate, mismanagement of ethnic issues such as Hindraf case. we can expect some long-term reverberation of this election result. First, a crack in the existing ethnic party system and ethnic representation is expected. Also, power reshuffling among the parties in the ruling coalition is likely. Second, there might be a tuning of power relation among the opposition parties-PRK, a multi-ethnic opposition is likely to lead the opposition. At the same time, the opposition has to prove that they can run the country through successful governing of those five state governments that they took. Last, it is proved that the reformasi movement, which was active in 1998-99 period, are still alive and kicking, making inroad into established politics in this election. It is likely that their impact on Malaysian politics get stronger.
