Abstract
Barisan Nasional(BN), after its 61-year party rule since independence, was ousted by a coalition of opposition parties, Pakatan Harapan(PH) in the 14th general election which was held in 19 May in 2018. There was little disagreement that the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal with governance failure was a major reason for BN's shock election loss. Amid of the split of BN over the scandal, the reconciliation of Mahathir with Anwar by joining PH, then opposition alliance attracted voters as it appeared to be new Malay leadership. Mahathir has played a role of ‘game changer’ in ‘unfair rules of the game.’ The political development after the general election seems to depend on the successful implementation of Mahathir’s reform measures and Mahathir-Anwar succession plan. Structural economic problems and rising uncertainty amid of US-China trade dispute are also major challenges Malaysia facing. Malaysia’s foreign policy under Mahathir’s leadership is expected to strives for balanced diplomacy and to set the diplomatic agenda of the region.
