Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to approach Luigi Dallapiccola’s Goethe-Lieder(1953) as a song cycle, and to relate the primarily serial organization of the seven songs with their cyclical organization as well as symbolism that the poetic image of the text reflects. Although Dallapiccola employs a tone row in his Goethe Lieder, his manipulation of row statement and distribution deviates from the basic twelve-tone principles that depend on textural symbolism, formal structure, and contrapunctal relations between the voice and instruments. Aggregate results from repetitions of (012) is significant because it illustrates his way of using serial techniques. Therefore, an appreciation of textural symbolism in accordance with the manipulation of the row indicates that Dallapiccola does not regard the tone row as a discipline but as a means of expressing his aesthetic in cyclicism.
