Abstract

This study analyzes microscopic barrack life in the North Korean military to understand the change of party-military relations from the Kim Jong Il to the Kim Jong Un period. Having in-depth interviews with 18 North Korean defectors who served in the military, we examine power structures and interactions among political officers, military commanders, and soldiers, with the perspective of ‘dual patronage’. Our findings show that the party’s supremacy over the military has persisted throughout Kim Jong Il’s ‘military-first politics’ as well as in Kim Jong Un’s rule. Particularly, in the Kim Jong Un era, the reduced quota of new party membership and the expanded authority of political officers have strengthened the patronage between political officers and soldiers.
