Abstract
This study employs a grounded theory approach to analyze the relationship between the Korean People’s Army and North Korean civilians under Kim Jong Un’s leadership. Unlike previous studies that focused on political or institutional dimensions. this research explores the everyday dynamics of civil–military relations. Based on oral narratives from North Korean Refugees who experienced the transformation of the military’s role during the Kim Jong Un era, the study conducted open and axial coding. The analysis identified “formalized civil–military unity” as the core category. Since the Military-First policy era(Son-gun era), the military has expanded its quantitative and qualitative presence across various sectors of society, while civilians have maintained formal relations with soldiers as part of their survival strategies. This formal unity is utilized, resisted, maintained, and accepted through daily inter- actions, leading to varying degrees of trust or hostility toward the military. More importantly, the repetitive performance of formal civil–military unity functions as a mechanism of reproduction that reinforces the militaristic context of the “socialist great family.” By highlighting these per- formative and routine dimensions, the study reveals how militarism is internalized as an everyday social process in North Korea.
