Abstract
This paper aims to summarize and critically examine various perspectives on political power and state systems reflected in the New Testament, while analyzing the issue of the church’s political participation that has recently enveloped Korean society and exploring possible alternatives. To this end, it first outlines four perspectives for understanding politics in the New Testament: (1) the dualistic view of the sacred and the secular, or the two-kingdoms theory; (2) the mediating perspective that seeks political, social, and religious reform or revolution; (3) political realism for the sake of survival or a detached adiaphora stance; and (4) a flexible centrist perspective between progressivism and conservatism. These perspectives are then examined and evaluated in relation to relevant New Testament passages. Furthermore, the paper investigates how such perspectives have been appropriated and misused by political forces and factions within modern and contemporary Korean church history, and finally considers how the alternative politics of the Kingdom of God envisioned by Jesus might be embodied in today’s Korean society, seeking a path of political-theological wisdom in practical contexts.
