Abstract

This study aims to critically re-examine Peter Leithart’s defense of Constantine through the political theology of John Howard Yoder and to propose an alternative model of political theology for the con- temporary Korean church. This paper critiques Leithart’s core claims, arguing that “Constantinianism” is not a polemical fiction but a struc- tural reality wherein the church’s ethical form was co-opted by the imperial order. It also addresses the limitations of Yoder’s own strat- egy of passive resistance, seeking an alternative in James Davison Hunter’s concept of “faithful presence.” Furthermore, this entire theo- logical discussion is applied to the case of the Korean National Prayer Breakfast, a symbol of church-state collusion, to analyze how Constantinianism is replicated today and to propose a faithful mode of political participation for the Korean church, one that is grounded in the cruciform nature of the gospel.
