Abstract
(Purpose) To identify actionable directions for improving higher education in Korea’s equine industry by comparing domestic university curricula with leading programs in the UK, Germany, and Australia. (Methods) We analyzed the official curricula and handbooks from four Korean universities and three overseas universities (RAU, FUB, and CSU). An expert panel validated the sampling/coding, and we ran a structured content analysis across nine domains (background, aims, compo- sition, practicum, specialization, ethics/welfare, sustainability, multidisciplinarity, and social-welfare/careers). (Results) Korean programs remain heavily oriented toward practice and certification, with mainly on-campus practicums, while welfare/ethics, sustainability, social welfare links, and multidisciplinary delivery remain limited. Overseas programs integrate science and welfare, formalize short- and long-term placements, embed One Health principles, and link clinical training to social welfare services, thereby producing broader career outcomes. (Conclusion) Korean programs should redefine PLOs and mandate five core areas: (1) scientific foundations, (2) welfare/ethics, (3) sustainability/One Health, (4) industry/governance, and (5) evidence-based training/performance analysis. They should also institutionalize intensive practicums and placements, strengthen multidisciplinary and social welfare integration, and adopt the OSCE and research-based assessments.
