Abstract

(Purpose) This study explored the professional development of a female aquatic rehabilitation instructor through narrative inquiry, aiming to understand the complex nature of expertise in this specialized field. (Methods) Employing an experience-centered narrative approach, we conducted four in-depth interviews with an experienced female aquatic rehabilitation instructor. Data were analyzed through thematic narrative analysis to trace changes in experience over time. (Results) Five themes emerged: (1) Entry into aquatic rehabilitation instruction—blending swimming and aerobics in a new context; (2) New discoveries in water—paradigm shift from “speed” to “resistance” and acquisition of “water rhythm”; (3) Acquisition of practical wisdom—development of intuitive safety management and individualized instruction strategies; (4) Experience as a female instructor—transformation of life experiences into professional resources within structural constraints; (5) Maturation as an expert and future orientation—embodied intuition and concerns for successor development. (Conclusions) Professional development in aquatic rehabilitation arises through recontextualization of diverse movement experiences. Tacit knowledge, such as “water rhythm,” represents practical wisdom acquired only through extended fieldwork. Female life experiences can serve as unique professional resources rather than career interruptions. These findings suggest the need for systematic training programs that incorporate field practice and mentoring beyond the current short-term certification.
