이 연구는 『經國大典』에 기재된 東·西班 正職 수를 계산하였다. 그동안 여러 연구에서 이것을 계산하였지만 계산 범주가 일정하지 않았고 연구마다 오차도 있었다. 각 연구 사이의 차이를 발생시키는 문제도 정리되지 못하였다. 이는 기존 연구가 『경국대전』의 정직 기재 양상을 분석한 토대 위에서 정직 수 계산을 진행하지 않았기 때문이었다. 이 연구는 기재 양상을 근거로 정직 수 계산을 둘러싼 『경국대전』 해석 문제를 해결함으로써 정직 수 계산을 검증할 수 있는 기초를 마련하려고 하였다. 먼저 『경국대전』의 관직 기재 양상에서 정직 기재 원칙을 도출하였다. 『경국대전』은 정직을 기재할 때 衙門 단위로 소속 정직 定額을 기재하는 것이 원칙이었다. 다음으로 이 원칙을 근거로 겸직과 체아직의 표기 형식을 검토함으로써 정직 수 계산과 관련된 두 가지 문제에 해답을 제시하였다. 첫째, 겸직 표기 문제를 다루었다. 기존 연구는 『경국대전』 겸직 표기에서 일정한 유형을 발견하지 못하였으나, 이 연구는 『경국대전』에 겸직 기재 유형이 크게 두 가지로 나뉘어 있었다는 사실을 밝혔다. 이로써 정직 정액을 계산할 때 겸직을 정확하게 구분하여 계산에 반영할 수 있게 되었다. 둘째, 체아직 표기 문제를 다루었다. 그동안 체아직으로 운용하는 관직이 각 아문에 기재된 정직뿐인지, 아니면 별도의 관직이 있는지에 대하여 견해가 나뉘었다. 이 연구는 『경국대전』의 정직 기재 원칙에서 볼 때 전자의 견해가 타당하다고 논증하였다. 이로써 각 아문 단위로 기재한 정직 수만 계산하면 동·서반 정직 액수를 모두 파악할 수 있다는 사실을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 위에서 검토한 내용을 바탕으로 동·서반 정직 수를 계산한 과정과 결과를 정리하여 제시하였다. 이 연구는 이처럼 『경국대전』의 정직 기재 양상 검토를 토대로 『경국대전』의 동·서반 정직 수 계산을 검증할 수 있는 기초를 마련함으로써, 『경국대전』과 여기에 기재된 官制에 대한 이해를 심화할 수 있었다.
Abstract
This study calculates the number of Dongban(東班) and Seoban(西班) Jeongjik (正職, regular posts) recorded in the Gyeonggukdaejeon(經國大典). This research aims to calculate and establish a solid foundation for verifying Jeongjik calculations by first analyzing how Jeongjik were recorded and then providing solutions to interpretation issues arising from the text. First, the study identifies the principles behind the recording patterns of official positions in Gyeonggukdaejeon. It reveals that the text lists regular positions based on Amun(衙門) and records the fixed number of Jeongjik assigned to each office. Next, the study addresses two key issues related to Jeongjik calculations： Concurrent Posts(兼職, Gyeomjik)：Previous studies failed to find consistent patterns in how Gyeomjik were noted in Gyeonggukdaejeon. This study, however, identifies two major types of Gyeomjik records, enabling clearer distinctions when calculating regular positions. Rotation Posts(遞兒職, Cheajik)：Scholars previously debated whether Cheajik roles were part of the regular positions listed under each Amun or were separate, additional positions. This study argues that the former view is more valid, based on the recording principles found in Gyeonggukdaejeon. As a result, only the Jeongjik numbers listed under each Amun need to be counted to determine the total numbers of Dongban and Seoban Jeongjik. Finally, the study summarizes the calculation process and results based on the above analysis. By reviewing how Jeongjik were recorded and resolving key interpretation issues, this study establishes a reliable method for verifying Dongban and Seoban Jeongjik calculations. This study’s approach also deepens our understanding of Gyeonggukdaejeon and the historical bureaucracy it documents.
