Abstract
This study offers a pedagogical reading of young Marx’s texts, from the Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844 to the “Theses on Feuerbach.” Marx critically reinterpreted Hegel’s concept of labor as both the realization of consciousness and the formation of sensibility. His examination of the Silesian weavers’ uprising demonstrated the possibility of potential for radical social transformation through proletarian agency, which led to his critique of the Young Hegelians’ “spiritual education for social change” in The Holy Family. However, in this work Marx implicitly accepts “environmental education for social change” from the French Enlightenment materialists. In the “Theses,” Marx identifies revolutionary praxis, rather than the shaping of consciousness through environmental conditions, as the core of social transformation. This shift moves education from a central role to subsidiary position as an effect of the practice. Drawing on his critical engagement with Hegelian thought under Young Hegelian influence, Marx empirically affirmed proletarian agency and expanded his study of political economy, which led to the development of a praxis-centered materialism. In this process Marx’s educational problematic is agitated. Based on these findings, the study argues that the “transition from education to praxis” was pivotal in shaping Marx’s distinctive worldview. It raises fundamental questions about the possibility of educational research on “Marx as a Marxist,” and suggests that any Marxist effort to achieve social transformation through education must engage with his thought before the disappearance of the educational problematic.
