Abstract

In “Privacy, Self-knowledge, Pluralistic communes: An Invitation to the Epistemology of the Family”, John Hardwig discusses the issue of how the family and our lifestyle can influence self-knowledge. According to him, a pluralistic commune is epistemically superior to other alternative lifestyles such as living by oneself, living with a roommate, a couple, the nuclear family, especially with regard to improving our self-knowledge. In the process of arguing for this, he assumes that dialogue with others is essential to self-knowledge. But is this true? Is it necessary for us to have dialogue with others in order to know ourselves better? Putting it differently, is it impossible to promote one’s self-knowledge without the advice of others? In this paper, I argue against this view by critically analyzing Hardwig’s reasons for it, and also suggest that there is a way to improve self-knowledge without having dialogue with others. Moreover, I claim that even if the dialogue may play an important role in enhancing self-knowledge, it is still doubtful that the pluralistic commune is always more conducive to self-knowledge than the couple or the nuclear family.
