Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship among the work environment, work intensity, occupational injuries, and subjective health of school food service workers, and to discuss the theoretical and policy implications. In particular, this study analyzed whether the relationship among the work environment, work intensity, occupational injuries, and subjective health of school food service workers differs according to the method of meal distribution. The analysis results show that work intensity has a positive effect on injuries in all meal distribution method groups, while the relationship between work environment and injuries was significant only among cafeteria-based workers. Regarding the associations with subjective health, higher work intensity was consistently linked to lower levels of subjective health across all groups. Furthermore, the analysis results showed that the relationship between injuries and subjective health was confirmed to have a negative effect only in the cafeteria-serving group, and that the relationship between work environment and subjective health was not significant in any group. The analysis results for the mediating effect showed that in the cafeteria-serving group, the path from work environment → injuries → subjective health had a statistically significant positive mediating effect. It also showed that in the relationship between work intensity and subjective health, a significant negative mediating effect was present in both the cafeteria-serving and mixedserving groups. Multi-group analysis further revealed moderating effects of meal distribution methods in the associations of work intensity with injuries (classroom vs. combined distribution) and subjective health (classroom vs. cafeteria, and classroom vs. combined distribution). Based on these results, this study suggested theoretical and policy implications for promoting the health of school food service workers according to the method of meal distribution.
