Abstract

This study aimed to comprehensively explore how cross-modal correspondence(CMC) operates within the contexts of artistic creation, aesthetic appreciation, and art therapy through a scoping review approach. Relevant literature published between 2000 and 2025 was systematically searched across eight databases(PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, RISS, KISS, DBpia, and NDSL), and a total of 86 studies were analyzed following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The findings revealed that visual-auditory correspondences accounted for the largest proportion, and that emotional, semantic, physiological, and learning mechanisms interacted in a multilayered structure. The application of CMC has expanded from visual arts and sound-based media to dance, design, and therapeutic practices. Sensory congruency was found to enhance meaning construction and immersive engagement, whereas incongruency functioned as a strategy to evoke attentional shifts and aesthetic tension. This study highlights CMC as a key cognitive-emotional mechanism underlying artistic experience and provides a theoretical foundation for future research in multisensory art and art-based therapeutic interventions.
