Abstract

This study conducts a comparative analysis of how far-right parties in major European countries pursue issue accommodation strategies. Focusing on Germany, Italy, and France, it examines how electoral systems, party structures, and coalition dynamics shape the mainstreaming paths of far-right actors. The analysis finds that in Italy―where a mixed-member electoral system and flexible coalition practices prevail—far-right parties have successfully entered institutional politics and expanded their policy influence. In contrast, Germany's proportional representation system, combined with strict legal thresholds and normative barriers, has effectively limited the integration of far-right parties into the political mainstream. France presents a hybrid case, where the two-round electoral system restricts institutional entry but allows for rhetorical and policy-level accommodation. These findings suggest that the rise and diffusion of far-right parties are not merely driven by voter preferences, but also shaped by institutional design and elite strategies. The study underscores the critical role of political institutions and strategic choices in enhancing democratic resilience against the challenge of radical right populism.
