Aspects of Summarization of Expository Text and It's Implication for Evaluation of Summary -In the case of High School Students-

In this article, I have studied on the aspects of summarization of expository text and its implication for the evaluation of them. Firstly, I have presented 46 students an expository text and made them write a summary. And then I have analyzed the aspects of summarization qualitatively. Summaries which 46 subjects produced have following features: (1) they are obligate to presented structure, (2) have generality of the presented contents, (3) have text markers showing comprehension of summarizer, and (4) have focus effect owing to text structure. In addition, (5) there is an activation of background knowledg and (6) selection of information through deletion and reconstruction in summarization. On the contrary, there are negative elements in the summarizations: (1) errors in interpretation of writer's intention, (2) incorrect informations. On the basis of these, I have designed a set of criteria for evaluation of summarizations. This work could contribute to the education of summarizations for students who have attained a level.
