초록
The purpose of this paper is to examine the democratic transition process of South Korea and Indonesia from authoritarian regime. In the examination of the nature of their authoritarian regime and the democratic transition process in the two countries, this paper takes legitimacy crisis as the common motive to propel transition in an authoritarian regime. In this context, it tries to compare and explain the differing modalities and results of transition in the two states applying legitimacy thesis. More specifically, the issues to be elucidated in this paper are as follows: What are the factors driving the democratic transformation in both countries? What do they have in common and what are the differences in the manifestation of democratic transformation? What empirical conclusions can be drawn regarding the democratization of authoritarian regimes from these characteristics of democratic transformation in both countries? This study, based on empirical analysis, can contribute to supplementing basic discussions on system change through causal explanation and typology of the democratization process of the authoritarian regime in the third world.
