초록
The purpose of this article is to analyze the popular understanding ofpolitics and democracy in Indonesia based on Asian Barometer Surveydata II and III. Some meaningful findings of this article are as follows: first, thepopular understanding of politics in Indonesia is irregular and unstablein some respects. Second, nevertheless, that of democracy is positiverather than negative. Third, most of all, the democratic transition hasbeen normally continued without serious obstacles since 1998. This article, therefore, presents three implications on democracy inIndonesia based on above findings. First, since the popularunderstanding of democracy is generally positive, democratic transitionwould be continued for the time being. Second, however, thedecreasing ratio of pro-democratic mass in 2011 compared to 2006raises a doubt that the transition might have been proceeded withoutpublic support. Third, low level of popular trust in political party, parliament, and the courts as well as popular preference of economicdevelopment to democracy are problems that Indonesia should solve forsuccessful democratization.
