영화제작을 통한 정신장애인 편견 개선 사례 연구

본 연구의 목적은 정신장애인 당사자가 주도하는 영화제작을 통한 편견 개선 활동이 어떻게 가능하였으며, 정신장애인에 대한 편견 개선에 갖는 함의는 무엇인지 규명하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 질적사례연구방법을 활용하여 영화제작에 참여한 정신재활전문가 및 정신장애인에 대한 면접조사, 언론의 보도자료, 영화제작 보고서, 영화텍스트 등 이차자료의 수집 및 분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과 정신재활시설에 거주하는 장애인들이 영화제작에 나선 것은 그들을 ‘이웃으로 함께 살아갈 수 없는 존재’로 바라보는 사회의 편견과 차별을 개선하기 위함이었다. 그들이 편견개선을 위해 영화제작을 선택한 것은 언론매체보다 더 효과적인 소통수단을 추구한 결과였다. 영화제작과정에서 장애인들은 스스로 내재적 편견을 극복하고 커밍아웃 하였으며, 일상생활을 생생하게 공개하고, 관객이 아니라 영화 제작자와 주인공이 됨으로써 그들의 역량과 내면의 목소리를 표출하는 등 임파워먼트를 경험하였다. 제작된 영화는 이웃, 지방자치단체 공무원 등을 대상으로 하는 상영회 및 교육에 활용되었고, 영화제에 출품되어 수상하는 성과를 거두었다. 장애인과 전문가들은 지속적인 영화 제작과 보급을 통한 편견개선과 정신장애인복지 향상을 기대하고 있었다. 본 연구는 정신장애인의 치료, 재활, 일상생활 등을 여과 없이 공개하는 영화를 제작하여 보급하는 것은 가장 효과적인 편견개선 전략으로 평가되는 ‘사회적 접촉(Contact)’의 한 유형임을 시사한다. 또한 영화제작을 통한 편견개선활동은 장애인에게 임파워먼트경험을 제공하고, 장애인에 대한 사회적 인식과 공감을 향상시킴으로써 편견을 감소시키는데 기여할 수 있음을 시사한다. 이러한 연구결과에 근거해 편견개선을 위해 정신장애인의 삶을 생생하게 보여주는 영화를 제작하여 활용할 것을 제안하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this case study is to investigate how user-driven anti-stigma film making was possible and what the meaning of those efforts was. For this purpose the author interviewed the manager, rehabilitation staff, and people with psychiatric disabilities who took part in film making and analysed other documents and news articles on their efforts. The analyses show that the psychiatric rehabilitation facility and users have experienced blatant prejudice and discrimination from the neighborhood. So they felt the urgent need for lessening the prejudice and stigma against them, and they decided to correct biased perception of people with psychiatric disabilities by making film that shows uncensored real life of their own. It was due to the demerits of the mass media that they decided to make film to lessen stigma against them. While making film, they had to come out and open their daily living and whole process of treatment and rehabilitation overcoming their self stigma. The main achievements of these efforts were their self empowerment and social recognition of their efforts after distribution of the films from neighbors, citizens, officials to film contest. This case study provides unique implications for anti-stigma efforts. First, Consumer directed film making and presentation is a sort of most effective anti-stigma strategy ‘Contact’because the film-making was a good way to show their real life and deliver their inner voices. This approach ensures self empowerment of the people with psychiatric disabilities and opportunities for indirect social contact between them and citizens which may contribute to lessening social stigma. Second, these ‘Indirect Contact’ approach using consumer directed film instead of ‘Education’approach may contribute to improving the outcome of anti-stigma efforts by governments.
