Abstract
This study was to explore the experience of a person with mental illness who lectured about their disease, and their recovery stories in a consumer-initiated anti-stigma program using contact. We gathered informations through in-depth interviews from six person with mental illness who are selected by using the purposive sampling method, and analysed through qualitative case study method. The results produced the following categorization of experiences; 'Banishing the pain and fear', 'Rise against prejudice', 'a Renewal life separated from illness', and 'the Small effort for change'. Experience of lectures through person with mental illness is understood as proudly self-disclosing themselves banishing the fear they had to face from public stigma and opportunities to communicate with the public against social stigma, at the same time to the process of endeavour to social change, rediscovering one's meaning and value, and to enjoy and appreciate the renewal life separated from mental illness. Based on these results, we suggested a practical alternative social welfare perspective needed for a person with mental illness to overcome self-stigma.
