Abstract

Based on the results of the study of prepositions in cognitive linguistics, this paper proposes that the preposition πρός in John 1, 1-2, which is often translated as “together” or “beside”, should be translated as “towards”, which is the original meaning. In order to provide a logical basis for this proposal, this paper first reveals that the movement of a trajector towards the landmark is the prototypal meaning of πρός, and that the alternative meaning and metaphorical extension of πρός take the archetypal meaning as a cognitive reference. Through this, we move away from the existing view that different prepositions can be used interchangeably when they are used indifferently and explain that from a cognitive linguistic point of view, each word has its archetypal meaning as a cognitive reference point, so even if they seem to mean the same thing, they are actually bound to reveal their own subtle differences. Based on this, it is argued that the πρός in Jn 1:1-2 should not be translated as “together” or “beside” as in the previous translation, but as “towards”, revealing its own meaning. This explanation would reveal the relational dynamics between the Word and God much more clearly.
