Abstract

This paper discussed the function and role of repetition in text comprehension. Deleuze and Guattari develop a discussion of ritornello, a repetition in music, in chapter 11 of ‘Mille Plateaux’. Based on this discussion of ritornello, the meaning of repetition in the reader’s text comprehension was explored. Deleuze and Guattari say that retronello has a directional, dimensional and transitive component. This ritornello has the repeating character of counterpoint and sonata form. The nature of this repetition also exists in text comprehension. The text understanding by this ritornello has territorialization, style, and consistency. Also, it has the characteristics of understanding according to the arrangement. These are the classical arrangement that follows the form of counterpoint or sonata, the romantic arrangement that unites the things of deterritorialization, and the modern arrangement that unites the heterogeneous ones. By means of these repetitions gain a life called the gain of consistency or surplus value. In this way, there is a popular who achieve an understanding with an individual character. Text comprehension education needs to pay attention to text comprehension reflecting the properties of ritornello.
