Abstract

This study focuses on the characteristics of rhizomes inherent in books and readers’ reading. The book rhizome generates multiple important meanings rather than converging its content into one central meaning. The reader puts the rhizome characteristics of the book into practice to generate his or her major meaning. The book rhizome makes reading rhizome possible. Deleuze and Guattari discuss rhizomes and book rhizome in Chapter 1 (Rhizomes) of <Thousand Plateaus> (Deleuze, & Guattari, 1980/2003). <Thousand Plateaus> is a book rhizome. This study examines the characteristics of the book and reading rhizomes based on the concept established by Deleuze and Guattari. The characteristics of the book rhizome can be divided into plateaus, collective assemblages, and heterogeneity. A plateau is a place where the land rises high and has no central (The one) peak. A plateau is a lump, and many plateaus are connected in a shape (bulb) to form a rhizome. A collective assemblage refers to a state of organizing many different types of components. A plateau is an organization of many different types of substances. Diversity means various properties. Since a plateau is a collective assemblage, its components vary. Plateau, collective assemblage, and diversity are the characteristics of a book rhizome. The reading rhizome is formed by the relationship between this book and the reader. The reading rhizome comprises connection, machinic assemblage, and reterritorialization. Connection is the cognitive relationship between the plateau of the book, which is a collective assemblage of diversity, and the reader. The reader cognitively connects with the unit content that makes up the book content. Mechanical assemblage is the state in which the reader separates the unit content from the book by his or her will and creates a collective assemblage with one main meaning. Reterritorialization is the act of making the collective assemblage a unique plateau of meaning for the reader. The reader’s reading rhizome creates a new plateau of meaning related to the book. By creating this meaning plateau, the reader achieves self-creation. The book rhizome enables the reader to self-create through rhizome reading.
