Abstract
This study examines the philosophical significance of Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of the ritornello (refrain) and its connection to the musical ritornello, as seen in the first movement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 (BWV 1049). In music, Deleuze’s process of ‘becoming-music’ unfolds through the ritornello, which functions both as a structural principle and as a driving force in shaping musical style. This study explores how the motifs that constitute the ritornello in this movement go beyond simple alternation between ritornello and episode, instead forming a connective thread throughout the piece. It approaches the ritornello as a dynamic force in musical development. Furthermore, through processes of difference, repetition, and transformation, the study identifies parallels between Bach’s compositional approach and Deleuze’s conceptualization of the ritornello, tracing a process of territorialization and deterritorialization.
