Abstract

In this paper, we will examine the history of how Chinese genealogical analysis has been conducted and how Korean language has been understood in this context. Genealogical analysis of Chinese has been a topic of interest among scholars since the 19th century. Western scholars have made considerable efforts to find the genealogy of Chinese through comparative analysis with Tibetan, Burmese, Daic, and Austronesian languages, and this has led to controversy among scholars over which language Chinese shares a genealogy with. Recently, in addition to linguistic analysis, archaeological and genetic information have been considered, so there is a trend to pursue both caution and sophistication in selecting evidence. In this context, hypotheses on various related language families or language groups, such as Tibeto-Burman, Sino-Tibetan, Trans-Himalayan, Transeurasian, and Austronesian, have been proposed, and China has always been located somewhere in them. In the early stages of research, Indo-Chinese was considered to be one language family, and the agricultural/language diffusion hypothesis was the background for this process. The region extending from Anatolia to the Fertile Crescent was discussed together with the Indo-European language family, and Chinese was also discussed as a northward expansion of agricultural cities established by primitive Tibeto-Burman farmers. As a result, Chinese was understood to form a single group with Tibetan and Burmese, or a subgroup with Daic languages, but went through a process of merger and division. This article will look back on the various aspects of the genealogical analysis of Chinese, including its names such as Han-Zhang language, Sino-Tibetan, and Indo-Chinese, and its history, and examine how Korean is discussed within them.
