Abstract

This paper provides a comparative analysis of seven typological characteristics between Chinese and Tibetan which are both pivotal languages in Sino-Tibetan family. From the diachronic viewpoint, this paper further divides each language into two periods, say Ancient period and modern period, to investigate what changes those seven typological characteristics have undergone. From this observation this paper tentatively reconstructs characteristics of the proto SinoTibetan(PST) which can be tabulated as below: (도표) Features plotted on Table : ① morphemes are monosyllabic, ② the language is tonal, ③ only a single consonant is tolerated at the beginning of a syllable, ④ the language is morphologically and syntactically analytic, ⑤ the use of measures(classifiers) with numerals is obligatory, ⑥ the language has adjective-noun order, ⑦ the language has SVO sentence order. Plus sign(+) indicates that the feature in question is present, minus sign(-) that it is absent.
