Abstract

After the Upper Paleolithic, the Korean peninsula has been shaped as it is today of which three sides are surrounded by the sea. Since then, our ancestors utilized various ocean resources for eating, and black seabreams were one of them. Black seabreams (Acanthopagrus schlegeli) are classified into the genus Acanthopagrus, family Sparidae, order Perciformes. Their excavated bones were found on 24 sites in Korea(Table 1). To be listed according to periods, 10 were from the Neolithic Age, 2 were the Bronze Age, 6 were the Iron Age, 2 were the Three Kingdoms period, and 2 were Goryeo Dynasty, suggesting black seabreams have been used as food resources since the Neolithic Age. The general public watching the excavated fish bones at a museum could think of several questions, such as “What kind of fish are they?” or “How big are they?”. The first one can be answered thanks to the development of Korean archeology, but it seems that previous studies can barely answer the second one. Thus, the current study aims to investigate the size of black seabreams using the excavated bones. The excavated bones of black seabream with a good condition are usually anterior maxilla and pubis. Therefore, they can be used for estimating the overall body size of black seabreams. For example, the excavated anterior maxilla from the shell mound in Gungok-ri, Haenam, had a length of 25.5 cm and a height of 25.8 cm. After restoring, it can be suggested that the anterior maxilla was that of an individual with a total length of 37~39 cm and a standard length of 24~25 cm. Also, the excavated pubis had a length of 31.3 cm and a height of 17.9 cm, which can be restored to be an individual with a total length of 45.0 cm and a standard length of 43.0 cm.
