Abstract

[Purpose] The purpose of this study is to investigate the experiences of teachers with general early childhood education certification who operate after-school programs for special education classes in kindergartens. [Method] To achieve the research objectives, the study recruited five general education teachers who teach after-school programs in special education kindergartens. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the collected data were analyzed using an iterative comparative analysis method. Through coding and categorization, major themes and subthemes were identified. [Results] Three themes emerged from the analysis. First, after-school teachers in special education kindergartens faced psychological and educational challenges in their first encounters with children with special needs, experiencing the structural limitations of inclusive education and anxiety as non-specialists. Second, teachers witnessed the development of independence and social skills in children with special needs through after-school activities. They also witnessed positive changes alongside typical children, deeply moving experiences that renewed their educational convictions. Third, through guiding activities between children with special needs and their peers, teachers grew into educators who understood the minds of children. They also discovered the appeal of special education and established their own expertise and professional identity. [Conclusion] These results suggest that even those without a special education background can develop sufficient special education and inclusive education competencies with appropriate institutional and professional support. Furthermore, we confirmed that after-school programs in kindergarten special education classes go beyond mere caregiving and serve as educational spaces that simultaneously promote children's development and enhance teachers' professional development. This study offers policy and practical implications for improving the quality of after-school programs and strengthening teacher support systems.
