Abstract
In his Foundations of Statistics, Leonard Savage presented a now classic model of rational choice. Despite its rigor and elegance, many philosophers, Savage himself included, was aware that it fails to work in the absence of well-defined probability and utility functions. Here is an important ramification of this fact: Savage's model is restricted to the choices in a small world, or a spatio-temporal region for which the agent possesses well-defined probabilities and utilities; conversely, his model fails to work for a choice in a big world, or a spatio-temporal region for which the agent lacks well-defined probabilities and utilities. Hence, we cannot help but asking this important question: “What is the rational procedure for a choice in a big world?” In this paper, I wish to present and defend an answer to this question. This answer was found in a somewhat surprising place, namely, the literature of opportunity set decision theory in economics.
