누가 세대 간 계층이동의 가능성을 비관 혹은 낙관하는가?

What Determines Citizens' Subjective Perceptions on Intergenerational Social Mobility?

누가 세대 간 계층이동의 가능성을 비관 혹은 낙관하는가? 최근 소위 ‘수저계급론’처럼 사회이동성에 대한 비관적인 대중적 인식과 담론이 증가함에도 불구하고, 세대 간 계층이동성에 대한 주관적 인식이 어떻게 형성되는지를 본격적으로 분석한 연구는 매우 드물다. 이에 본 연구는 부모세대 대비 본인의 계층에 대한 주관적 인식과 본인 대비 자녀세대의 계층이동 가능성에 대한 전망을 구분하여, 이 두 가지 종류의 세대 간 계층이동성을 누가 왜 비관 혹은 낙관하는지를 분석했다. 구체적으로 경제적 양육환경 가설, 경제적 취약성 가설, 준거집단의 사회적 지위 가설, 능력주의 가설, 기회의 공평함 가설이 이론적으로 검토되었다. 2016년도 여론조사 자료를 분석한 결과, 부유한 환경에서 자랐을수록, 현재 경제적으로 취약할수록, 준거집단의 사회적 지위가 높을수록, 성공을 위해 본인의 능력보다 다른 것이 중요하다고 믿을수록, 그리고 기회가 공평하지 않다고 믿을수록 부모세대 대비 본인의 계층위치가 낮다고 비관했다. 반대로 능력주의를 믿는 사람들일수록 그리고 소득수준이 높을수록 자녀세대의 계층이동의 가능성을 비관할 확률이 높았다.

Abstract

What determines citizens’ subjective perceptions on intergenerational social mobility? Despite recent negative public opinion on the prospect on upward intergenerational social mobility in Korea, academic analyses on this topic are surprisingly less studied. To mitigate this gap, this paper analyzes what determines citizens’ subjective perceptions on intergenerational social mobility in Korea, by using the 2016 public opinion survey. Empirical evidences report that the subjective perception on intergenerational mobility from parent generation is influenced by economic upbringing, economic insecurity, reference group effects, opinion on meritocracy, and perception on equal opportunity. However, those who support meritocracy tend to pessimistically perceive their children’ upward mobility.
