Abstract
This study aims to explore concrete instructional approaches that acknowledge the literary value of wordless picture books, a genre distinguished by its strong visual artistry. In wordless picture books, images rather than written text lead the narrative, and meaning is shaped through the interaction between illustrations and the physical qualities of the book. Through visual grammar, readers engage with the narrative, and the sequential arrangement of images reflects aesthetic qualities similar to those of film. Considering these characteristics, montage theory, which elucidates how meaning emerges through the connection and combination of shots, can serve as a methodological principle for guiding learners in interpreting and constructing meaning from wordless picture books. Based on these principles, this study proposes instructional strategies using David Wiesner’s wordless picture books. First, through the principle of selection and combination, teachers should guide learners to examine image placement and connect visual elements so that they can interpret the narrative flow and understand sequential continuity. Second, through the principle of mismatch and conflict, teachers should guide learners to focus on visual counterpoint and recognize moments of tension in order to derive multilayered meanings. Third, through the principle of expanding audience participation, teachers should guide learners to create audiovisual imagery that multilayers the meaning of the work and to engage with open endings using paratexts, enabling them to shift from receivers to creative producers of new narratives.
