Abstract
This study investigates the growing concern over dark patterns in South Korean credit card companies’ mobile apps, particularly in the workflows for account withdrawal and card cancellation. Applying the Temporal Analysis of Dark Patterns (TADP) framework, we examine how user frictions accumulate across three levels: within screens (intra-page), between screens (inter-page), and across the entire system (system-level). In a leading card company’s app, we identify confirm shaming, misleading redirects to call centers, and promotional banners irrelevant to cancellation tasks. These patterns culminate in a “Roach Motel” structure—easy to enter, difficult to exit—which contradicts global regulatory standards from the FTC, DSA, and OECD. The study concludes with design recommendations for ethical UX, including clear exit paths, unbundled consent, and pre-launch compliance checks, urging Korean firms to align with international norms and improve user trust.
