Abstract

Ethical discussions on Deceptive Design have been growing as negative user experiences on online platforms continue to rise. This study examines Manipulinks, a type of Deceptive Design that deceives users through textual or visual expressions. Experimental stimuli were designed in shopping app contexts where Manipulinks are common. Three writing types-Direct expression, Humor, and Confirmshaming-were presented across three scenarios: newsletter subscription, app download, and subscription cancellation. Their effects on click behavior, user emotion (annoyance), and continuance intention were analyzed. No significant link was found between writing type and click behavior, but user emotion and continuance intention showed significant differences. In newsletter and app download scenarios, Humor and Confirmshaming caused greater annoyance and lowered continuance intention compared to Direct expression. In contrast, in subscription cancellation, Humor elicited the strongest negative emotion, while Confirmshaming was perceived as less negative. These findings highlight that UX writing effects vary by context, emphasizing the need for ethical and context-sensitive UX writing.
